The Customer
The Woodland Trust, the UK’s top conservation charity, protects and restores woodlands. Managing 1,000+ sites, it aims to plant 50 million trees by 2025, preserving biodiversity and fighting climate change.
The Challenge
The Trust faced significant challenges with its existing VMware infrastructure, which was costly and complex. Additionally, a server room rebalancing exercise at their Grantham headquarters introduced dependencies that complicated any migration effort. Ensuring the continuous availability of critical systems, such as donor management and conservation databases, was essential to avoid disruption to their operations.
Our Approach
Transputec audited VMware, mapped dependencies, and designed a Hyper-V solution with Azure Backup for resilience. They deployed Hyper-V with automated failover, tested disaster recovery, and migrated 15 virtual machines with zero data loss, enabling real-time recovery and providing 24/7 support for a smooth transition.
The Outcome
The migration resulted in a 30-40% reduction in licensing costs, allowing the Trust to redirect savings toward their tree-planting initiatives. System uptime improved significantly, reaching 99.9% availability thanks to Hyper-V replication and Azure-integrated backups. The new infrastructure is scalable, supporting the Trust’s ambitious growth plans, and is deeply integrated with Microsoft technologies, enhancing security and operational efficiency.
