An AWS Advanced Tier Partner is a consulting partner that has met AWS’s second-highest bar on the Services Path: a set number of accredited and certified staff, and a track record of launched customer projects that AWS has validated. It is the tier above Select and below Premier, and it is awarded on evidence rather than on application.
That matters because the badge is one of the few signals in cloud consulting that cannot be self-declared. Anyone can call themselves an AWS specialist. Only AWS can confirm the tier, and the requirements are published. This article covers what the tier requires, how the three tiers differ, and what the status does and does not change for the customer.
What Is an AWS Advanced Tier Partner?
An AWS Advanced Tier Partner has cleared AWS’s published requirements for the Advanced level of the Services Path. According to AWS’s own partner tiers page, that means eight accredited individuals, four AWS Foundational Certified staff and six AWS Technical Certified staff, of whom at least three hold Professional or Specialty certifications.
On top of that sit twenty launched opportunities with combined monthly recurring revenue of at least $10,000, and a partner business plan agreed with AWS. The launched opportunities are the part competitors cannot shortcut, because AWS has to have seen the deployments go live.
Two things in that list are worth pausing on. The certification floor is specific, so a partner cannot reach the tier with one or two strong engineers and a lot of sales people. And the twenty launched opportunities are real customer deployments that AWS has seen, which is why the status is harder to fake than a logo on a website.
The annual AWS Partner Network fee is the same $2,500 at every tier, so the cost is not what separates them. The staffing and the delivery record are.
AWS Partner Tiers: Select, Advanced and Premier
There are three tiers on the Services Path and the jump between them is steep. Select is the entry level. Advanced sits in the middle and is where most capable mid-market consultancies land. Premier is a small group with competency requirements and an executive business review on top. The published requirements make the gap concrete.
| Requirement | Select | Advanced | Premier |
|---|---|---|---|
| Accredited individuals | 4 (2 technical, 2 business) | 8 (4 technical, 4 business) | 20 (10 technical, 10 business) |
| AWS Foundational Certified | 2 | 4 | 10 |
| AWS Technical Certified | 2 | 6, min. 3 Professional or Specialty | 25, min. 10 Professional or Specialty |
| Launched opportunities | 3 (total MRR $1,500+) | 20 (total MRR $10,000+) | 50 (total MRR $50,000+) |
| Annual APN fee | $2,500 | $2,500 | $2,500 |
| Also required | None beyond the above | Partner business plan | 3 AWS Competencies, executive business review, sustained attainment |
The line most buyers care about is the fourth one. Twenty launched deployments is a different proposition from three, and it is the clearest reason to prefer Advanced over Select when the work is a production migration rather than a proof of concept.
For UK buyers the tier is also a rough proxy for scale. Reaching twenty validated deployments takes a bench rather than a handful of contractors, so an AWS Advanced Tier Partner is unlikely to be a one-person consultancy with a reseller agreement. That does not make the larger firm the right choice, but it does tell you the capacity exists.

Is an AWS Advanced Consulting Partner the Same Thing?
Effectively yes, but the name is out of date. AWS restructured its partner programme and the current tier names on the Services Path are Select, Advanced and Premier. The phrase AWS Advanced Consulting Partner belongs to the older naming, and AWS’s own tiers page no longer uses it.
It still gets searched constantly, which is worth knowing if you are comparing suppliers. A firm describing itself as an Advanced Consulting Partner is usually describing the same status under the previous label, though it can also mean nobody has updated the website in several years. Either way, check the current designation rather than the wording.
The reliable test is simple. Ask which tier the partner holds today, and on which path. The Services Path covers consulting and delivery work. A partner who cannot answer that in one sentence is not a partner whose AWS credentials you should be relying on.
One practical note for procurement. If a tender response or supplier questionnaire asks for AWS partner status, give the current tier name and the path, not the legacy wording. An AWS Advanced Tier Partner that answers with an obsolete label invites a follow-up question it does not need.
What the Tier Actually Changes for You
Three practical things, and one that people overstate. The staffing floor means certified engineers are actually on the account. The validated delivery record means AWS has seen the work. And the tier opens up programme access, including migration funding, that lower tiers do not reach. What it does not do is guarantee the partner is right for your workload.
Funding is the most tangible of these. Transputec holds AWS Advanced Tier Services Partner status and has direct access to AWS Migration Acceleration Program funding for complex migrations, which can take real cost out of a move that would otherwise be paid for entirely in-house.
The delivery record is the second. Transputec has designed and operated more than 150 UK AWS estates, with UK-based AWS architects and 24/7 operations, and typically takes around 30% out of AWS spend after a FinOps review. One UK client, IQPC, now saves over $1 million a year on AWS.
The caveat is worth stating plainly. The tier tells you a firm has the certifications and the deployments. It tells you nothing about whether they understand your sector, your compliance position or your existing estate. Treat it as a filter that removes the unqualified, not as a shortlist of one.
The question worth asking next is about people rather than badges. Which named architects would be on the account, how many of the twenty deployments resemble yours, and who answers at 3am. An AWS Advanced Tier Partner should be able to answer all three without checking.
Conclusion
AWS Advanced Tier Partner status is a useful signal because it is earned on published criteria and confirmed by AWS rather than claimed by the partner. Eight accredited staff, six technical certifications and twenty validated deployments is a meaningful bar, and it is the reason the badge is worth checking before a migration rather than after one.
It is still only a filter. Once you have a shortlist of partners at the right tier, the real questions are about your estate: who has done this migration, in this sector, at this size, and what did it cost. The tier gets a supplier onto the list; those three answers decide who wins. FAQs
What are the AWS partner tiers?
On the Services Path there are three: Select, Advanced and Premier. Each step up requires more accredited and certified staff and more validated customer deployments. The annual AWS Partner Network fee is $2,500 at all three, so the tier reflects capability and delivery history rather than spend. An AWS Advanced Tier Partner sits in the middle of that scale, above Select and below Premier.
What is the difference between AWS Select and Advanced Tier Partner?
Staffing and delivery record. Select requires four accredited individuals and three launched opportunities. Advanced requires eight accredited individuals, six AWS Technical Certified staff including at least three at Professional or Specialty level, and twenty launched opportunities with combined monthly recurring revenue of at least $10,000.
Is AWS Advanced Consulting Partner still a current term?
No. AWS restructured its partner programme and the Services Path tiers are now Select, Advanced and Premier. The older Consulting Partner wording still appears on many supplier websites and is still searched heavily, but AWS’s own tiers page no longer uses it.
How do I verify a partner’s AWS tier?
Ask which tier they hold today and on which path, then check it against AWS Partner Finder rather than against the supplier’s own marketing. A current partner will answer in one sentence. If a supplier claims AWS Advanced Tier Partner status but cannot say when it was last renewed, treat that as a reason to keep asking rather than as a disqualification.
Does Advanced Tier status mean the partner is right for my project?
No, and it is not meant to. The tier confirms certifications and a validated delivery record. It says nothing about sector experience, compliance knowledge or fit with your existing estate, so use it to remove unqualified suppliers rather than to pick one. Ask for two references at your own size and in your own sector instead.
