Easy to use interface

server01The Transputec Cloud Server platform is a self-serve, easy to use, tool where you can provision anything from a single online server to an entire estate for your personal or business use.

The provisioning process is simple. Decide how much CPU, RAM and HDD you require and we will tell you the price. Decide how you want to be billed (by the month, day or even hour) and that's it. Your online server will be made available and we will bill you at the right time. It couldn't be easier.

Each online server is a virtualised server designed to behave exactly like a physical server so that it is easy for you to work with. You can chose a single server or as many as you need, there is no limit.

You can run any operating system, including OS images specifically configured for your business. We provide pre-installed operating systems for Linux (Debian, Ubuntu and CentOS), the entire Windows suite and a base Unix image. You can install whatever you want on top of that – it's entirely up to you.

We know that our customers want the freedom and flexibility to introduce additional capacity as and when they require it, without having to make any upfront investment. Our Cloud Server platform allows you to do just that.

You can easily adjust the capacity that you use to cope with peak times or if you have an urgent need for some new servers. This can all be performed via the web interface – no more waiting for quotes and then for servers to be provisioned. It's all in your hands.

Our Cloud Server platform is hosted in multiple UK-based data centres, so if you require geographic redundancy this can easily be achieved. We also have presence in Europe, North America and Asia Pacific - so if you want to deploy something currently hosted from London to users in those regions your service can be made available with a simple "push" to run the service from a data centre near them.

Cloud computing architecture

The Transputec Cloud platform runs entirely on highly scalable server hardware, with no SAN/NAS required.

The platform includes three distinct software layers:

  • Web control panel and billing
  • Cluster management and API server
  • Virtualization hosts

These are entirely distinct components, which communicate via well-defined APIs.

A full description of each layer follows below:

This runs once centrally, and provides the web interface and the billing system for your usage. It communicates with the API server using the public external API.

This is the component that you are most likely to customise.

This runs once centrally. It maintains the overview of which virtualization hosts hold which virtual drives and which cloud servers, and hence where new instances should be provisioned.

It exports our public external API, and communicates with the virtualization hosts using an internal API.

This runs on each virtualization host individually. It manages storage for virtual drives and virtualization for cloud servers.

Transputec uses Linux KVM, the advanced virtualization platform built into mainline Linux. We believe KVM is superior to Xen, VMWare and Virtuozzo: see Why we chose KVM virtualization below. It supports high-performance cloud servers running any OS with no special drivers. Cloud servers can be created and scaled at any size from 2GHz/1GB up to 8-core/8GB.

Our storage backend uses local RAID arrays on each virtualization host, divided into virtual drives and shared between virtualization hosts over iSCSI. This offers redundancy and high performance with no single point of cluster failure and no expensive SAN/NAS hardware.

What is Cloud Computing?

Cloud is a computing model providing web-based applications and computing resources on demand. By deploying technology as a service, you give customers access only to the resources they need for a specific task.

Cloud Application

Cloud applications are run and interacted with via a web browser or hosted desktop.
Main Advantages: You will not deal with the burden of software maintenance, license, ongoing operation and support.

Cloud Platform

The middle level named 'Cloud Platform' provides a computing platform or framework as a service. A platform where applications may be run in an environment composed of utility cloud services in a logically abstract environment.
Main Advantages: A cloud platform dynamically delivers, configures, reconfigures and servers as needed to cope with increases or decreases in demand.

Cloud Infrastructure

Transputec Cloud Platform infrastructure offerings include servers, storage, virtualization components and some extras features for building your private cloud computing environment immediately with the minimum of inconvenience.
Main Advantages: Virtualisation allows the splitting of a single physical piece of hardware into independent environments, scalable in terms of CPU, memory, disk, data transfer and other components.

How much does it cost to setup?

We have no basic cost to setup the platform.

Where are the servers held?

The datacenter is located in the UK.

How do I support?

We either provide first line support 24/7/365. We support the virtualization infrastructure, but our customers self-manage their operating system configuration and applications.
